Shiona
For Finance Board
MORE ABOUT OUR GROWING TEAM

Shiona is a current freshmen majoring in economics and math. She loves working with (seb), working as an A team ambassador telling prospective students why she fell in love with UMBC. She also loved assistant directing a show in the new playwright festival and pretty much sees all the shows presented by Theatre COM and MTC because she loves theatre.

I am running for SGA Finance Board because I want finance board to be more of a student body based sector of SGA. I believe the best way to approach this is by furthering the relationship it has with already involved clubs as well as reaching out to the unrepresented clubs on campus. However, I want to follow through with funds to guarantee that the funds are active. Likewise, I want Finance Board to improve with student's feedback through out the year. Overall, making sure that SGA embodies the distinct interests on campus.

Mai-Han
For Finance Board

This semester, Mai-Han has been volunteering as an ESL teacher for the Esperanza Center, an immigrant resource organization in Baltimore.  Mai-Han is also involved as a STEM Committee member for the mentor-research program the Reach Initiative, which aims to encourage high school women to pursue careers in STEM. Lastly, as the current treasurer of Amnesty International, Mai-Han is organizing fundraisers to help with the Flint water crisis.

Having served in SGA my freshman year through the ProveIt! Coordination Team and Leadership Development branch, I have seen the potential that SGA has to be the voice of the student body and foster positive change on campus.  I want to use my experiences to create a supportive, transparent, and inclusive environment where we can empower all UMBC students. If elected to the Finance Board, I will work to create training workshops so that student orgs fully understand the allocation request process, ensure that all meeting minutes are accessible online, and advocate for the use of the Green Paw fund for environmentally friendly events. UMBC’s student organizations play such an important part in our campus life and diversity. As a Finance Board representative, I plan on giving our student orgs the necessary support that they need to grow.

Bri
For Senate

Brianna Jackson is currently the Vice President of Zeta Sigma Chi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. and the secretary of our Black Student Union (BSU). Through her sorority, she has worked with her chapter to bring uncomfortable conversations to the forefront, including hosting lectures and talks on Deaf culture and awareness, cultural appropriation, and the struggles faced by women in the workforce. She recently spoke at an event hosted by the Women's Center focusing on trauma and mental illness in relation to Black women, which served to tell the stories of how intersecting identities affect professional and academic life. Through our BSU, she has organized for administrative accountability and student action. Protesting in response to a racially-charged incident and bringing together students, staff, and faculty, she advocates heavily for authentic inclusivity. She is currently advancing projects through her sorority to bring mental health awareness and a culture of body positivity to the campus community. In addition to her current platform, she is hoping to emphasize inclusion in all diversity efforts through the SGA Senate. Stay tuned for more projects on multiculturalism!

When we think about our Student Government, we tend to orient the center of power in the hands of our elected officials, or more specifically in those of the Executive Board. Yet, we must refocus our ideas around SGA and remember that the true strength of our government lies in the voice of the student body. I am passionate about people and progress; as a Senator I will serve the interests and needs of the campus community, as well as taking initiative on being the key connection between students and other representatives. For populations that feel disenfranchised and underrepresented, I will work towards actively integrating multiculturalism and inclusivity into our SGA, as well as fostering stronger relationships with students and student resource centers. Together, we can create a better UMBC experience.

More about Brianna:

In his three years at UMBC, Evan has been closely involved with both SGA and student org leadership. As Election Board Chair, Evan advocated fiercely for fair elections and fought to protect voters from harassment and intimidation. Evan has also played a role in the leadership of College Democrats, USDemocrazy.com, and the UMBC's new volunteer income tax assistance site.

As someone who has been involved in SGA since freshmen year, I have seen both the best and the worst that our student government has to offer in terms of being an inclusive channel to advocate for student priorities. I am running for the Senate because I believe that we can do better. We can join in the efforts of other SGAs across the country to circumvent the publishing monopolies and secure cheaper textbooks for students. We can promote institutional reforms that will ensure that SGA officers are accountable to students and to one another. We can increase the political clout of students in Annapolis. We can do all these things and more if we elect leadership that takes the project of campus democracy seriously.
